Greenhill Aged Care to Expand Hillside with New 20-Bed Community Following $4 Million Government Grant

July 28, 2026

Greenhill Aged Care is pleased to announce the expansion of its Hillside residence in Figtree, following the award of a $4 million Australian Government Aged Care Capital Assistance Program (ACCAP) Grant.

The funding will support the construction of a new purpose-built 20-bed residential aged care community, increasing Hillside’s capacity from 86 to 106 permanent residential aged care places. The expansion represents a 23% increase in capacity and reflects Greenhill’s ongoing commitment to providing exceptional care for older people across the Illawarra.

Supporting the Growing Needs of the Illawarra Community

Demand for high-quality residential aged care continues to grow throughout the Illawarra, particularly for people living with complex health conditions and dementia. The Hillside expansion has been carefully planned to help meet this increasing need while allowing more older Australians to remain close to the people and communities they know and love.

The additional places will also help improve access to care for people leaving hospital who require ongoing residential support, strengthening the region’s aged care services now and into the future.

Designed for Comfort, Independence and Wellbeing

The new 825-square-metre community will be thoughtfully designed to provide a welcoming, safe and contemporary living environment where residents can feel at home.

Features will include:

  • 20 private resident rooms, each with its own ensuite and contemporary furnishings
  • Spacious dining, lounge and activity areas that encourage social connection
  • A dedicated Cultural Wellbeing Room to support inclusion and meaningful engagement
  • Expanded clinical and nursing facilities to enhance resident care
  • Dementia-enabling design with intuitive wayfinding, clear sightlines and accessible spaces
  • Beautiful landscaped gardens, outdoor seating and accessible walking paths
  • Modern nurse call systems, resident safety technology, Wi-Fi and digital connectivity

Every aspect of the design has been planned to support dignity, independence, safety and quality of life.

A Significant Milestone for Greenhill Aged Care

The announcement was celebrated during a visit to Greenhill Aged Care by The Hon. Sam Rae MP, Minister for Aged Care and Seniors, alongside Alison Byrnes MP, Member for Cunningham; Carol Berry MP, Member for Whitlam; and Fiona Phillips MP, Member for Gilmore.

During the visit, the group toured Hillside and met with residents, team members and Greenhill leadership, recognising the importance of investing in quality aged care services that enable older Australians to remain connected with their families and local communities.

Greenhill Chief Executive Officer Vitas Tulich said the funding represents an important investment in the future of aged care throughout the Illawarra.

“We were honoured to welcome Minister Rae, Alison Byrnes MP, Carol Berry MP and Fiona Phillips MP to Greenhill and to share the care, dedication and vibrant community our residents experience every day.

This funding will allow us to add 20 permanent beds and welcome more older people who need high-quality care close to home.

The new community will provide private rooms, welcoming communal and outdoor spaces, a dedicated Cultural Wellbeing Room, and contemporary clinical and safety infrastructure. Its dementia-enabling design will support dignity, independence, wellbeing and connection for residents with a range of care needs.”

Continuing Greenhill’s Commitment to Exceptional Care

Situated within the historic Greenhill Estate, Greenhill Aged Care has become one of the Illawarra’s most trusted residential aged care providers. Since Hillside officially opened in 2013, followed by Greenhill Manor in 2016 and a major expansion in 2019, Greenhill has continued to invest in high-quality accommodation, compassionate care and enriching lifestyle experiences.

Once complete, the new Hillside community will strengthen Greenhill’s ability to support local families for generations to come, ensuring more older people can access person-centred residential aged care close to home.
